South Korea to Build Hyperscale AI Data Centre with AWS Partnership

SK Group, a South Korean conglomerate with interests spanning from chips to construction, announced on Monday plans to build the nation’s largest artificial intelligence (AI) data center in partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The two companies are set to launch the project later this month, with a groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for August, according to industry sources.

The facility will be located in the Mipo industrial complex in Ulsan, 305 kilometers southeast of Seoul. It will feature 60,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) and a power capacity of 100 megawatts, making it the largest AI infrastructure of its kind in the country, the sources added.

Ryu Young-sang, CEO of SK Telecom Co., had unveiled the plan for the hyperscale AI data center with 60,000 GPUs in collaboration with a global tech partner during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in Spain this March.

SK Telecom intends to invest 3.4 trillion won (US$2.49 billion) in AI infrastructure by 2028, with a significant portion earmarked for the data center project.

Quick Take

This initiative positions South Korea at the forefront of global AI infrastructure, demonstrating a serious commitment to compete with U.S. and Chinese tech giants. The integration of renewable energy, public-private partnerships, and provincial incentives signals a strategic, scalable approach. Execution will hinge on securing power, cooling, and chip supply—but the economic and technological payoff could be substantial.
